The world of orthodontics can be overwhelming at first, but we’re here to help! At Evolve Orthodontics, we want you to feel informed and confident at every step of your treatment journey, so we’ve compiled a list of answers to commonly asked questions at our practice.

Frequently asked questions about orthodontics

Is Invisalign® treatment really invisible?

It’s virtually invisible. Invisalign® clear aligners are made of transparent plastic, so they won’t be noticed from a couple of metres away and shouldn’t show up in pictures.

*Invisalign® aligners are a registered medical device, you should always read and follow the label as well as the instructions of your treating orthodontist.

Will orthodontic treatment interfere with speaking?

Your treatment shouldn’t get in the way of normal speaking. You may lisp a little for the first day as your mouth adjusts to your new appliance, but this should go away quickly.

Can I smoke while wearing aligners?

Smoking is discouraged while wearing aligners because it is possible for them to become stained and discoloured. If you plan to smoke, you should remove your aligners first.

Can I chew gum during treatment?

Chewing gum while wearing an appliance is not advised because gum can stick to your appliance and cause breakages. If you are having Invisalign® treatment, you can simply remove your aligners to enjoy a stick of gum.

What’s the best way to clean my aligners?

The best way to clean your aligners is by brushing and rinsing them in lukewarm water or using Invisalign® Cleaning Crystals. It’s important that you brush your teeth after each meal and prior to re-inserting your aligners to maintain proper hygiene.

How can I brush my teeth with braces?

First, you must turn the toothbrush at an angle. Brush over the front, back, and chewing areas of each tooth, and then your tongue, gums, and the roof of your mouth. Finish by gently cleaning around your braces, brushing first from the top and then from the bottom.

Should I go to the dentist during orthodontic treatment?

Yes! It’s especially important to keep up your oral hygiene during treatment. You should continue to see your regular dentist every six months for a cleaning.

What is an orthodontist?

An orthodontist is the most qualified person to diagnose, prevent, and treat issues with the alignment of your teeth and jaws. They started as a dentist, and specialised in the field of orthodontics by completing:

Bachelor degree in Dentistry (Five years)
Masters degree in Orthodontics (Three years)
Registration as a Specialist in Orthodontics by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)

Why should I straighten my teeth?

People have orthodontic treatment to improve the appearance, health, and function of their teeth. Straightening your smile can help your:

Hygiene

Having your teeth straightened will make it easier for you to look after them. It’s more difficult to clean your teeth when they are crowded and overlapping, and inadequate cleaning is a major factor in tooth decay, gum disease, and tooth loss.

Tooth wear

Bad bites may lead to clenching, grinding, and excessive or uneven wear of your teeth.

Gum health

In severe malocclusions, such as deep bites, the lower front teeth can damage the upper gum line.

Jaw joints

Some bad bites may stress the jaw joint, causing damage and pain in and around the joint.

Speech

Some people have difficulty speaking properly because of alignment problems with their teeth and jaws.

At what age should a child see an orthodontist?

We would recommend that any child aged seven or older be seen. Benefits of early intervention include:

Reducing the need of tooth extraction
Reducing the need for future jaw surgery
Preserving or gaining space for permanent teeth
Reducing the risk of tooth injury
Correction of bite problems
Reducing and simplifying treatment time

Do I need a referral to see an orthodontist?

No, you don’t need a referral to start treatment with us. However, we are always happy to accept a referral from your dentist, and will work closely with them throughout your treatment with us.

Does orthodontic treatment hurt?

No! You may feel some slight tenderness or discomfort after fitting and adjustment appointments, but this will go away in a few days. In the meantime, you can manage any soreness with over-the-counter pain relief.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

Most comprehensive treatment takes between 15-24 months, but some minor issues can be treated in as little as 3 months! We won’t know the length of your treatment until we assess your smile at your free consultation.

How much does orthodontic treatment cost?

Each patient at our practice receives a 100% customised treatment plan, which means their treatment price is custom as well. To find out the cost of your treatment, we will need to examine your smile and design your treatment plan at your free consultation.

Free Consultation

- For patients 8 years and up. A recent general dentist check up is preferred to ensure accurate records.
- Your initial consultation with our Treatment Coordinator is free. If you are comfortable with our process and fee’s, we can proceed with a customised treatment plan.
- Our specialist orthodontist will commence designing a precise treatment plan specific to your smile. The $120 digital planning fee includes a follow-up consultation to present your plan and arrange the next steps towards your beautiful new smile.

Digital Treatment Planning Fee

1. Non-Refundable Fee – The $120 planning fee covers the creation of a customized digital treatment plan by our Specialist Orthodontist, Dr. Seerone. This fee is non-refundable.
2. Payment Timing – The fee is payable when a patient chooses to proceed with digital treatment planning after their complimentary consultation.
3. Inclusions – This fee includes:
- A detailed digital treatment plan designed using advanced orthodontic software by our specialist orthodontist.
- Review of scans, X-rays, and records to ensure the best treatment approach.
- A breakdown of treatment options, duration, and costs specific to the patient.
4. Exclusions – This fee does not cover the cost of orthodontic appliances, treatment commencement, or any additional diagnostic procedures required by external providers.
5. Plan Validity – The treatment plan remains valid for 6 months from the date of creation. After this period, a reassessment may be required.
6. Adjustments – If treatment requirements change significantly, a new planning fee may be required for adjustments or modifications.
7. Booking Confirmation – Payment of the planning fee confirms the next step in the patient’s orthodontic journey but does not obligate them to start treatment.
